Checked out by Island County Sheriff

Post by racfish » Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:24 pm

I was crabbing 8.1 this last weekend when a boat came right at me.I told my buddy it must be a cop cuz nobody aims a boat at you with that speed.Sure enough it was the Sheriffs Dept.

They were the two nicest sheriffs I've ever encountered. They inquired about my safety equip.I showed them my Flare Gun,Fire extinguishers,PFD's.They reminded us to mark our crabs and to be safe. Then we laughed and joked a lil bit.It made for a great experience on the water. These guys were truly super cool guys. Not to mention a very sweet boat. They asked if we saw anyone checking pots randomly.I said no not this time. But told them about some guys losing pots or getting them emptied.

All in all they actually made for a wonderful boating experience. Two thumbs up for the Island County Sheriffs Dept.

Gotta love how they come flying right at your boat. Next time they do that I plan on acting like I am hiding stuff in my boat. :^o

Great to hear you had a positive police contact. That's how it is supposed to be. Good post, Thanks.

Hal...If they are anything like the Canadian border guards.....BAD CHOICE!!!! My brother-in-law thought it was funny also and is still trying to put his car back together. Good luck! Steve

Fly Fishing is the art of attaching a fake bug to a line and relying on the appropriate manipulation of the rod to deceive the fish into eating a sharp steel hook covered with feathers and fur.

Like I said they did nothing like that.I've done that border thing before. These guys asked to see stuff.I showed them what they wanted .End of story. They were polite and friendly.I find most officers are pleasent if you are pleasent to them. You get what you give in the world.

Racfish..You got that right.... They have a job to do and they will be great guys if you treat them with respect. Hope your summer continues to be nice..Steve

My kid and I got pulled over on I-5 (headlight was out), he was driving with his permit and was scared spitless! I just told him to be calm, polite and give the officer honest answers. We were polite...he was polite, end of story. I don't get folks that have to give the law enforcement people attitude, they're just doing their jobs!

I feel for any Law Enforcement personnel. They are loved and hated so much at the same time.It would be horrible if I had to put up with what and who they do put up with.My hat is off to any one who works Law Enforcement. Its a thankless job.I thank all the officers in our great country .Like I said you get out of them what you give them.My blessings and prayers are with them always.

I wish they'd work a little more on the north end of Camano. I've had my pots stripped every time I set them out. I just can't see sitting in a 14' boat and guarding them. I've seen them twice but couldn't get out fast enough.
For those who care. 20ish foot alumaweld or North River. Soft Top and Black strip on the side.
I need a bigger telescope.

I was on North Camano when this happened up in Utsalady Bay.After being up there crabbing for years it was my first time seeing the Police. In fact I've crabbed up there for years and never ,I mean never been checked by the warden.I've never ever seen a warden. The sherrif that checked me out told us they were there because Tribal Police warned them of crab pot robbers and even told the sherrif that it was Native Americans stealing them.Like I said these two guys were super cool. They laughed with us saying that they werent sure why tribal police even told them this tip ,cuz there is nothing they can really do about tribal matters.Go figure????????Still and all it was a very positive experience.Since this happened I typed a letter to the Island County Sherriffs dept commending both officers on their courtesy and proffesionalism.

That's the spot. We have a house on the beach. Not to be profileing but that doesn't suprise me. The area is closed to commecial crabbing period and it used to be a favorite spot for them to set their pots. For the first time in years we're able to catch keeper crabs........ if people would keep their mits off the pots. Telescope, 300 Weatherby. Disregard last statement.
