I was just wondering how I would go about catching one. I will be staying at deer lake in Stevens county for about a week, and want to try something new. I really have no clue on how to target them so any info would be greatly appreciated.

I got a buddy who fishes for Lake Trout all summer over in Idaho...Sure, it's not the same lake your fishing, but the tactics can't be too different. I'ma give him a call and see what sort of advice he's got...

Deep deep deep, big quick fish and jointed rapala's, plug cut herring. They'll take just about anything they thing they can eat. Look for them with the electronics, structure is king, they're preditors. look for bait fish jumping and troll around them at the right depth. Some people troll really deep but I've had my best successes trolling structure where they can sit and hunt, remember they look up when they're hunting.

I have caught a few outside WA trolling pink spoons on the DR's and jigs in early spring/late fall. generally deep, but depending on the lake, they can be caught rather shallow. For instance, I have caught them (16-17") at 50ft(near bottom) trolling spoons on Lk. Superior. And likewise, caught a decent 23" on a spring fed lake in 25ft(near bottom) in the winter on a jig. Trolling near bottom is probably the best idea imo.....

Hey thanks guys. What size spoons/plugs would you guys recommend?

I have quite a few coyote spoons and coho killers in the 3" range. But (for some reason, dont know why) I really like the flatfish, I was thinking a size U20 and bigger(3.5" +). But D&D guide service is using mostly F7(2.1/4"). Seems offly small for a lake trout lure, but these guys are proven anglers all across the board and are especially deadly when it comes to lake trout. Is this the standard size mack lure or is this just a lake Chelan thing?

K15 yeah, that is a big ole boy. And thats more what I had in mind. I was thinking more down the lines of salmon steelhead baits not trout baits. But D&Ds also said the T4 flatfish (slightly smaller than the K15 kwikfish) is taking all the big macks on chelan.

I can't remember if was this year or last or maybe the year before but the guy manning their booth at the Sportsmans show, showed me k15 quickfish in the "gay boy" pattern of green and purple on the chrome quickfish and also the glow in the dark. I've never done very good with them but ya never know. I've had the best luck with plug cut and jointed rapalas. Oh and don't forget wedding rings with big worms.

What color hearing? I have used hearring on that side of the state for catfish and trash fish and done quite well. But everybody knows what side of the mountains your from when you tell them what you are using lol.

The old standby's in Idaho are bigger Kwikfish fished off points and out deep where the Lake trout (Mackinaw) lay, as well as a setup I will mention below.

The setup we used the one time I went out for them was a big 11" hotsport flasher, with a bucktail fly ahead of two snelled hooks, with a little strip of Squawfish flesh.

Trolled deep and slow, out in 120 to 180 feet of water...Sitting RIGHT off the bottom. Keeping that lure right in the strike zone, within abuot 5 feet of the bottom.

Im not sure if im too late, for your trip. I am not familiar with the lake that you are fishing, When i lived in Colorado thats all i used to fish for, (lake Granby) summer time you have to go deep 80-100ft, lakers can be tough to figure out. The main lure of choice that worked the best is Tube jigs ranging from any where from 1 1/2 to 4in long tipped with sucker meat ( not sure if using sucker's is legal here) i fished a 3in 90% of the time, as far as colors go i would start off using a glow(white) chartreuse, motor oil or a pumpkin seed jigged about 6-12in off the bottom, I have caught them any where from 20-23in all the way up to 16lbs off of tubes, the key to tubes was the sucker meat (scent) I hope this helps.

Spoons and off drop points or structure. ive caught them as shallow as 8' to 80' I have never had to go deeper than that. But that was cle elum lake. Really have no idea about the other lakes.
