Blake Island

I have a couple days off next week and Blake Island came up as a destination. It looks gorgeous. I was wondering if anyone has stayed here? How is the fishing? Is it toddler friendly? It was rated a 10 in my camping book. Thank you. :bounce:

I've anchored and boat camped off the north end. really nice destination and the marina has picnic/play areas for the kids, plus a whole island of beach and trails to explore. Yup, great place to take your family. There are deer too BTW.

When I was a kid, my scout troop would camp at the state park every year. We had a great time every year! You can fish off the pier, clam on the beaches. We always had a couple boats for water sports too. It was a long time ago with fond memories but I'll bet you'd have a good time camping there.

It might be easier to launch from Manchester if your in Kitsap County it is a straight shot from there maybe a 5 minute boat ride.

Ok, I live in Oly, so I was just looking online where to launch. I have a 15ft tri-hull and 5 minute boat ride is perfect. Thank you.

Don’t forget your pole! Pinks in record numbers are passing by everyday. Just locate the schools and toss ¾ oz pink rotators and jig them thru the schools. Work your jig hard and you will surely score. The pinks will be jumping and skirting the surface so fish the top water with your jig. There is great fishing water between the south end of Blake Island and Vashon Island. Good luck!

Thanks stampie, you better believe any destination we were camping at, I was going to be wetting my line. I have heard nothing but good things from this area, so I will have all my gear with me for whatever species is willing to bite. I can only hope those pinks don't go on lock jaw when we arrive. :bounce: :bounce:

BTW, there's also an artificial reef created by WDFW on the southwest side of the island, just offshore. Plus kelp beds which should get you that one fish limit of bottomfish we are allowed (I think that's the limit in that area, better check to be sure).

Thanks Mike, I'll go back and read thru Area 10 to see what our anglers have done in the past, but so far, looks like I'll be doing more than just camping!! :bounce:

Blake Island State Park was incredible. We had a total of 5 in my little 15 ft tri-hull. I launched from Pomeroy in Manchester. You need to make arrangements with the local library to leave your rig overnight. You aren't able to leave your rig in the parking lot at the launch.
The trip was about 15 minutes, but the view to the island was amazing. You will be greeted by volunteers at the dock and they will direct you where to moor. I was very impressed with the hospitality and knowledge these volunteers possessed. We felt like we were staying at a 5 star hotel. The beach is super clean and a nice grassy area and play area for the kids.
I did wet my line for a little bit and caught a weird looking eel fish thing and a bunch of sculpins or bullheads. I found walking on the rocks at the jetty, a bunch of redrock crabs. I used some of my sandshrimp on a hook and would cast to the crabs. They would come over and latch on. My son and I had a blast catching those crabs with rod and reel. Too bad they were out of season because all the crabs we caught were male and over 5 inches.
I can't tell you much about the campground because with all the gear and the lack of knowing where to leave my rig overnight, our trip was a nice short day trip.
I highly recommend camping here, the only downfall was the burn ban that the island had. I would call ahead of time to see if it is lifted. Also be aware the docks are first come first serve. If you have a smaller boat like mine, you won't have a problem finding a spot or if the dock is full, you can talk to some of the bigger boat owners to see if they will let you raft onto them.

Most power boats coming from the Seattle area launch from the Don Armeni Boat Ramp and Viewpoint, at 1222 Harbor S.W., which sits at the tip of Duwamish Head, at the mouth of Elliot Bay. An attractive launch point that faces the Seattle Center skyline, it is an immensely popular location. Caution is advised when negotiating ferry channels. A fee machine is on site, which is closed after 11 p.m. Other launch points include Eagle Harbor and Fort Ward State Park on Bainbridge Island. Moorage rental is available and is first-come, first-serve, year round
