New Federal law to prevent all fishing inside the boarders of the US?

Post by Anglinarcher » Mon Mar 15, 2010 12:52 pm

This seems to be the best place for this post, so here goes nothing.

I heard a comment from a fishermen last week that Obama and the Democrats were trying to pass a bill that would prevent fishing inside the US, to include sport fishing.

I took it with the proverbial grain of salt, but then I heard the same thing from a political candidate taking on the radio in Montana while visiting there last week. I believe the guy was a Democrat for what it is worth.

Has anyone else heard this?

If it is true, how would you deal with this?:shaking:

Is this the Hope and Change so many people were looking for?

Come on now, no flames, just honest responses.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

I hope you are right, but if you are, why do you think a political candidate was making that statement on radio?

Even in Montana they have fact checkers I would think?

The rumor was started on some right-wing blog to induce some discussion. It was blown out when ESPN falsely assumed as fact and wrote a big article (which they later officially apologize for), so then every right wing and left wing blogger and home journalists blew it out of proportion and got anglers all confused.

It was however reported as not true. http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2010/03/11 ... 65275.html

This would take years and I mean years to get passed if it could ever be passed. If they were going to ban fishing and hunting all together or even if it was close to happen it would be on every news channel every website and people whould be up in arms over it. So I mean come on, Do you believe everything in politics?

This topic continues to get recycled over and over again on all the fishing boards. An effective campaign.

I sure hope everyone is right, I could not handle life without my number one stress relief.

The problem with politics is that you can't believe either side (radicals are on both extremes) so you ever know what is just around the corner.

You guys have, well almost, given me cause to relax.:eye:

When they pass the lead ban in this State they will be one step closer to no hunting or fishing. IMHO!

How so...? You have plenty of alternative options to lead and they're not banning in all waters.

They will not shut down recreational fishing. The impact to the local and state economies would be devastating. This whole thing is a fear tactic. Relax.

When they outlaw fishing poles, then only outlaws will have fishing poles. #-o

No one is looking to ban fishing in the US, well except for maybe PETA. The nation as a whole could not take the loss in revenue that is generated by the commercial and sport fishing industry. What I believe was initially floated was a ban on all fishing in specific areas. This was either misunderstood or intentionally blown out of proportion by the opposition and has been floating around cyberspace for the past few years. Certain areas could use a break from any or all fishing pressure for a few years to help replenish dwindling stocks and give the ecosystem a chance to recover. The idea would be that if you close and area, there can be no incidental or by-catch which is a major concern of all conservation groups. It also is easier to manage a total closure of an area, anyone caught fishing is breaking the law. If you think about it, we already have this in place at the State level and I don't think that the Government is looking to control fishing at that level. Instead I can picture them enacting this type of a ban in Federal waters, which they already have the authority to do whether we like it or not.
