sucker fish

So I was fishing in the Columbia River last May I believe, and I caught a pretty big sucker fish and I really enjoyed the fight it gave. Where can I catch more of these fish, what can I use to be more succesful..... any advice would be greatly apprecited.

i went to the columbia by washougal and caught a couple carp in february. i was just using worms bottem fishing.

i've used corn and worms to catch them from the columbia, if you are shore fishing you should be able to see them along the rocks. i found that site fishing for them can be very productive just get the bait a few inche's in front of them and they will work over to it and suck it up.

You can also use bread while sight fishing for them.

i am not sure but i was just translating.


i have noticed that mostly at night the sturgeon/squawfish/suckers find small soughs to go into at night to get out of the current.

depends of what kind of shore line on the columbia that you are fishing. most of the suckers i've caught have been in the wenatchee area on up. of coarse the water needs to be clean to see. the shore would need to tapper out aways with arocky structure , the suckers like to feed around them and on top if the cuurent isn't to fast. the wenatchee river along with the natches are good places to try if you are in their area. the suckers will move into rivers from the lakes to spawn and some rivers back in the midwest you could almost walk across them with out getting wet because there are so many of them.

I have done allot of bottom fishing for these reel burners and also catfish. I have great luck with a normal bottom rig I like sliding sinkers and a 16 in leader
I than put on a corky (to hold scent also keeps worm up on top of rocks ect..)size/color dependent on location and water conditions. In the Columbia I would use pink or green med/small corky than a 1 O bait holder hook and worm.Don't forget the scent Worm oil works good but for those guys just about any scent works just use a good amount these fish key in on the scent trail. But the worm oil gives you allot of species to target this is how I caught a 19" small mouth.
