Cindy and I drove over to Roses around noon to check out the ice conditions. Lots of traffic had been down to the parking area, so hard packed snow/ice to drive on. Looking out over the lake there were cracks, and questionable looking ice (big circle areas (looked like air pockets) all over the lake. We test drilled a hole at the dock by the launch, and it was around 1 1/2in or so thick. As I was drilling, I stepped out with one foot to put pressure on the auger, and was rewarded with the sound of complaining ice. Needless to say, I didn't venture out on the ice. A couple of "Small" LMB was all we could see in the hole, no other fish activity, so we didn't drop a hook this trip. With the colder temps it won't be long. Stay safe out there on the hard water.

Hey Lewis, from what I've been reading I think others would have ventured out for a good time! LOL Way to play it safe. And yes, a few more single digit days should do the trick.

Lewis I am glad you didn't walk on out there. Lakes can be tricky this time of year for sure. I wish weather would of been like it was today on Thursday. It was cold but very little wind. Ended up catching two one about a pound that looked like he was beat up by a mugger and one about 2/4 pound that had a tag. No water movement hardly at all.

Lew-miester. You are a braver soul than I my salty ol' friend...I used to use my 340 pound cousin Kavin as my ice tester... One time while ice fishing at Soda Lake, a meandering, groaning fissure crack in the ice chased us all the way to the bank! Yikes! Lol Jiggy

Hey guys, I have a healthy respect for hard water, and my fishing fever isn't enough to make me want to take chances. But I like to try to entice the lil buggers up through the ice hole. Hope to get over to banks later for some perch action.
Stay warm and safe out there.

Hi Lewis, I wonder if Roses just doesn't ice up because it's relatively close to the Columbia??? Any way I am leaving wee early hrs tomorrow for a walleye trip to Billy Clapp, sure hope the ice is good there, guess I am gonna find out. If it is not safe I will head to Evergreen or down to the Scootney or possibly the Lind on the holes. My wife came back from Spokane today and saw quite a few fishermen out on the ice at Moses Lake..

Howdy BMGW, Roses gets good ice when temps are there. It is usually an ice fishing hot spot, but the temps have been fluctuating this year and the ice is just later than usual. However, there are areas on the south end where some springs are located where the ice can remain dangerously thin. Good luck with your fishing excursion, I look forward to the upcoming reports.
